Arroyo Residence
Located in the Spanish Valley near Moab, Utah this relatively inexpensive new home is a direct response to the sun, a nearby arroyo and the ever present rim wall.
The master suite is separated from the guest rooms by a sizable living, dining, kitchen area which is oriented toward the sun.
The concrete floor inside extends outside to connect the interior and exterior spaces. A large roof overhang projects over the terrace protecting the interior spaces from excessive sunlight and heat.
Concrete floors are radiantly heated and provide a thermal mass to passively keep the house cool during the day.
Stained plywood cabinets, concrete, corrugated steel, synthetic stucco and sheetrock round out a simple and industrial material palette
